Maryland's Arbovirus Surveillance Testing Results 2004
(Updated 10/13/04)

Avian:

The Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DHMH) discontinued pickup and testing of dead birds in 2003 once the virus became established throughout the State.

At present, the U.S. Department of Defense and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources are continuing to monitor arboviral activity in both live and dead birds in Maryland. No birds have tested positive for West Nile virus in Maryland in 2004.

Equine:

A horse in Cecil County has tested positive for West Nile virus infection. This is the only confirmed equine case of WNV in Maryland this year.

Mosquito Pools (Pool = group of mosquitoes):

Thirty-one (31) mosquito pools in 11 jurisdictions have tested positive for WNV in Maryland in 2004.
