Glossary

Acaricide: a pesticide that kills mites and ticks.

Natural cycle: similar to the concept of life cycle (for example, the stages through which a deer tick passes during its lifetime), the complete cycle of host-Borrelia interactions and transmission by which the Borrelia organism multiplies within a susceptible animal; then spreads to a tick; and then (when the tick feeds) to a different susceptible animal. In various parts of its natural cycle, Borrelia interact with several vector and host species (mice, deer, and, among others, human beings)."

Tick-borne diseases: Bacterial, rickettsial, or viral diseases transmitted to humans or to animals by ticks. Worldwide, several dozen such diseases are known.  Some of the more prominent tick-borne diseases in the United States in recent years include: Rocky Mountain spotted fever; Lyme disease; Ehrlichiosis; Babesios; and others.  The CDC has a web page about tick-borne diseases.
